Identifier cleanup without guesswork

Shopify GTIN Guide: Barcodes, SKUs, MPNs and Variants

A wrong identifier can be worse than a missing one. This guide shows which Shopify field holds which value and gives merchants a safe decision path for manufactured, private-label, and custom products.

What to remember

A SKU is your internal identifier; a GTIN is assigned outside your store.

Do not copy one variant's GTIN to every variant.

Validate GTIN length, check digit, and duplicate use before changing a feed.

Never guess a GTIN, MPN, or brand to make a warning disappear.

Step 1

Know the identifiers

The names are often mixed together in spreadsheets, but they serve different purposes.

SKU

A Stock Keeping Unit is an internal code created by the merchant for inventory, fulfillment, reporting, or operations. It is not automatically a GTIN.

Action: Use a stable, unique SKU format for each sellable variant.

GTIN and barcode

GTIN is the identifier represented by formats such as UPC, EAN, JAN, or ISBN. In Shopify, the Barcode field is where a legitimate GTIN is normally entered for the variant.

Action: Copy the exact number assigned to that product or variant by the manufacturer.

MPN and brand

An MPN identifies a product within a manufacturer. Brand identifies the product's brand. These values must describe the real product, not an advertising label or an internal shortcut.

Action: Confirm both from the manufacturer or the product's authoritative documentation.

Step 2

Use the correct decision path

Work from what the product actually has, not from what a feed warning seems to request.

Widely manufactured product with an assigned GTIN

Enter the correct GTIN for each variant. Google recommends supplying accurate identifiers when they exist and warns against submitting incorrect values.

Action: Verify the code on packaging or with the manufacturer before import.

Custom, handmade, vintage, or private-label product

Some products do not have a manufacturer-assigned GTIN. Do not invent one. Use accurate brand and MPN data when appropriate and follow the destination's current rules for identifier availability.

Action: Document why no GTIN exists so future catalog editors do not fill the field with a guess.

Products with variants

Size, color, or other variants can have different identifiers. Google advises using the identifier assigned to each variant rather than treating the product family as one item.

Action: Audit identifiers at the variant level, not only on the parent product row.

Step 3

Find invalid and duplicate barcodes

A populated Shopify Barcode field is not proof that the value is usable. Validate the number itself, then review where else it appears in the catalog.

Check supported lengths and the check digit

Google accepts common GTIN lengths of 8, 12, 13, or 14 digits and requires the final check digit to be valid. Spaces and dashes can be ignored during validation, but invented digits do not become a legitimate identifier.

Action: Normalize each Barcode value to digits, verify its length, and run the official check-digit calculation before export.

Review duplicates across products and variants

The same GTIN reused on unrelated products or copied across size and color variants can misidentify what is being sold. Google advises using the identifier assigned to each product or variant and restricts duplicate submissions with the same GTIN and matching variant attributes.

Action: Group the full catalog by normalized Barcode value, then verify every repeated value against packaging or manufacturer records.

Keep products without assigned GTINs separate

Custom, handmade, vintage, or private-label products may not have a manufacturer-assigned GTIN. A missing value in that situation needs review, not an automatic failure and never a made-up barcode.

Action: Record a possibly-not-assigned state and confirm the destination's current brand, MPN, and identifier rules.

Step 4

Clean the catalog safely

Identifier cleanup should be reversible, source-backed, and easy to review.

Export before bulk edits

Keep a dated Shopify product export before changing identifiers. It gives you a review trail and a rollback reference if mappings are wrong.

Action: Save the original export and a separate proposed-change sheet.

Flag uncertainty instead of guessing

A blank field with a documented owner is more honest than a plausible-looking number that belongs to another item.

Action: Use statuses such as verified, unavailable, and needs manufacturer confirmation.

Recheck the destination

After updating Shopify, review the destination feed or Merchant Center diagnostics. FeedSnapshot is a preflight and cleanup aid; the destination remains the authority on acceptance.

Action: Confirm that each correction reached the channel and resolved the intended issue.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my Shopify SKU as the barcode?

Only if that value is also a legitimate GTIN assigned to the product, which is uncommon for a merchant-created SKU. Do not place an internal SKU in the barcode field just to fill it.

Where can I find a product's GTIN?

Shopify notes that it is commonly printed above or below the barcode on product packaging. You can also obtain it from the manufacturer or an authoritative supplier record.

Do all variants share one GTIN?

Not necessarily. Variants such as different sizes or colors can have distinct manufacturer-assigned GTINs. Use the exact identifier assigned to each sellable variant.

How can I find duplicate barcodes in Shopify?

Compare the normalized Barcode value for every variant across the full catalog, group repeated values, and verify each group against packaging or manufacturer records. FeedSnapshot performs this read-only catalog check and flags duplicate GTINs for review; it does not automatically edit the store or assume every repeated value is wrong.
